I’m back from a break! Email me if there’s something you think I should cover or you just want to chat, as always. Today’s issue of PHONE TIME includes: my favorite emoji proposals, shoppable collage app Zeen is shutting down, and is this the end of the one-page resumé? Plus, memes of the day are back!!
☎️⏱️ Last Thursday was World Emoji Day! ☎️⏱️
The holiday was created in 2014 by Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge, chosen because July 17 is the date shown in the calendar emoji. 📅
Something you may not know: anyone can submit a proposal for a new emoji to the Unicode Consortium. The Consortium is currently accepting submissions until the end of the month. This webpage and FAQ page have more guidance. There are a lot of things to keep in mind! The Consortium also notes that the “process of standardizing emoji is influenced neither by petitions nor by suggestions conveyed in emails, letters or tweets from celebrities or government officials.”
You can find examples of previous submission proposals here and here. Some of my favorites to read through include: the teapot 🫖, bubble tea🧋, oyster 🦪, flying saucer 🛸, and lime 🍋🟩.

“Vine, but in AI form” sounds like the worst idea I’ve ever heard.
Re-mediate lit mag, which aims to be “a home for informed experimentation and conversation in the field of computer-assisted writing,” launched its third issue. I came across the publication on Instagram, and I’m particularly interested in how it tackles questions related to AI ethics, bias, and how artists and technologists respond to generative AI. The third issue, available online, is titled “[Next Realities],” and explores virtual, augmented, and extended realities.
Instagram doesn’t limit your reach for saying “link in bio,” head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said in a video posted yesterday.
NEW INC community members are releasing work on Metalabel. Works include a poster book by Secret Riso Club and chapbook by Legacy Russell.
Zeen is shutting down on Aug. 21. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to reach the scale needed for Zeen to become a self-sustaining business,” the shoppable collage app’s team wrote. Zeen was a pivot from social collaging platform Landing, which shut down in Sept. 2024.
Many of the Instagram comments on the announcement expressed enthusiasm for Landing over Zeen. / Via Zeen Eric Adams just launched an Instagram Broadcast Channel.
“One glaring reason for Adams suddenly trying to up his Instagram game is the rise of Zohran Mamdani, the Queens assemblyman whose socialist ideas and (admittedly elite) TikTok strategy recently propelled him to victory in New York City’s mayoral primary,” Arwa Mahdawi wrote in The Guardian earlier this month. The Browser Company of New York launched a rebrand. The new website includes a new logo, and cursor trails representing the page’s other viewers.
The old website is archived at 2020.thebrowser.company.
It’s time to rethink the one-page resumé in the age of AI job application screening, writes Callum Borchers in The Wall Street Journal. I hate thinking about my resumé just as much as the next person, especially when trying to describe my work across social platforms. I suspect a lot of other people who create online feel similarly.
My dream resumé is just my best tweets and memes compiled.
